In a word association game, you look for what words have in common. Asoduel turns that into a puzzle. Sixteen words hide four groups of four, and you have three minutes to sort them. It is free and runs in your browser, with no account to make.
What a word association game is
The classic version is spoken. One person says a word, the next says the first word it makes them think of, and so on round the table. It is a party game, and it is also a quick look inside how people connect ideas.
A word association puzzle runs the other way. The links are already decided, and you have to find them. Instead of saying what a word makes you think of, you work out why four words were put together.
How Asoduel works
You see sixteen words on a board. They make four groups of four, and each group shares one link. You select four words and submit them. A right guess shows the group and its link. A wrong one costs you 25 points.
After three groups, the last four words are found for you, and you pick their link from four options for a bonus. Each puzzle has an easy group, a hard group and two in between, and the hard ones score more.
What the links look like
A link can be almost anything. Some are plain categories, like things in the sky. Some are about the words themselves, like words that become new words when you add a letter. Some need you to finish a phrase, like words that can go before "light".
The trick is that the board is built to mislead. A word that seems to belong to one group often belongs to another. That is what makes it a puzzle rather than a list.
Play it with someone
Most word puzzles are something you do on your own. Asoduel is built for two. You can play the same board live against a friend and race to claim each group, or play a board yourself and send the link so your friend can try to beat your score.
If you would rather play alone, there is a new daily puzzle every day, the same board for everyone, with a leaderboard for that day.
All puzzles are new
Every Asoduel puzzle is written for Asoduel and checked by a person before it goes live, so the groups are fair and the decoys are not cheap. New puzzles are added in batches.
